| THE SAVANNAH MILE |
The Two Hundred Club of the Coastal Empire Commemorates National Police Month with The Savannah Mile on Saturday, May 24. The first heat begins at 7:40AM. The course takes participants one mile straight down Drayton Street, starting at the south end of Forsyth Park, finishing at Broughton Street. Entry fees are $12 per person until May 11, $18 until May 22, and $20 on race day. The Savannah Mile runs in several heats which includes a family division, five year age groups guaranteeing many award winners, climaxing with an elite division and heat that promises to bring a competitive finish and extremely fast times. There is a cash prize of $3,000 for any man breaking a 4-minute mile and woman breaking a 4 and half-minute mile. Proceeds will benefit the Two Hundred Club of the Coastal Empire. The 200 Club provides immediate financial assistance to the surviving spouse and children of local law enforcement officers and firefighters who lose their lives in the line-of-duty while protecting their communities. Savannah’s Cultural Arts Theatre will audition for its summer production of “Once on This Island” May 28, 29 and June 1. the play is a catchy, Caribbean-flavored version of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale, The Little Mermaid. With music by the Tony® Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, this upbeat musical captures the imagination with tender ballads and colorful dance numbers as it tells the courageous story of the power of love. The show will be choreographed by Muriel Miller and Nancy Holmes of Savannah-based Abeni Cultural Arts. Auditions for singers will be held on May 28 and 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Black Box at S.P.A.C.E., 9 W. Henry St. Auditions for dancers and callbacks will be June 1 at 1 p.m. at the same location. The show calls for up to 30 talented singers and dancers of all ages, ethnicities, sizes and experience levels, ages 10 through adult. | CHILD-HEALTH GRANTS AVAILABLE |
UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation (UHCCF) has grants available to help children up to age 16 who need critical health care treatment, services or equipment not covered by their parents’ health benefit plans. They include health care services such as speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy sessions, prescriptions, and medical equipment such as wheelchairs, orthotics and eyeglasses. Parents and legal guardians may apply for grants of up to $5,000 for child medical services. For eligibility guidelines or to apply go online to www.uhccf.org OR telephone 1-800-328-5979 ext. 24459. To be eligible for grants, children must be 16 years of age or younger. Families must meet economic guidelines, reside in the United States and be covered by a commercial health benefit plan.

Youth For A Cleaner ENVIRONMENT (YFACE) Will host a recycling roundup on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Lake Mayer from noon- 4p.m. THE EVENT FEATURES A KIDS WALK, activites, games AND rides. The first 50 kids participating in the walk with 20 aluminum cans will receive a free t-shirt and a roundup cowboy /girl hat. The event is free; a donation fee is requested for other walkers. This donation will go towards recycling scholarship and activity for youth in YFACE and the community. YFACE mission is to provide youth 5 and up with the opportunities to learn how to protect their environment and improve their community through education, networking and volunteering. AARP will offer a TWO PART 8 HOUR DEFENSIVE DRIVING course for drivers older than 50 ON Sunday, June 22nd and Sunday, June 29th from 1pm to 5pm at the JEA (5111 Abercorn Street). THE cost IS $10 AND PARTICIPANTS MUST ATTEND BOTH CLASSES. Class size is limited. Materials will be provided by the instructor. Bring your driver's license and $10 fee to the beginning of the June 22nd session. Passing this course - which does not include driving - may earn a discount on insurance.
